Facial Fat Grafting

Dr. Brooke R. Seckel – Treating Those Seeking Facial Fat Grafting in Boston

What is facial fat injection, also called fat transplantation or fat grafting?

Facial fat injection or fat transplantation is a procedure in which fat is injected into areas of the face for its anti aging or facial rejuvenation effects. Fat injection, fat grafting or fat transplantation can replace facial fat that has been lost during aging and plump the face to make the face look younger and less gaunt. In some cases facial fat injection or transplantation can be done instead of a facelift.

Why do people have facial fat injection or fat grafting?

People may choose to have fat injection or fat grafting to the face for the following reasons:

  • They have facial aging with loss of fat and loose skin but want to avoid a facelift.
  • They have lost cheek volume and want to plump the cheeks to restore their apple cheeks.
  • They have deep nasolabial fold lines or marionette lines and want a permanent correction.
  • The temple area looks hollow.
  • They look gaunt and want a fuller more youthful looking face.
  • To lift the eyebrows.

How do you do facial fat injection or fat grafting?

Fat is usually taken from the abdomen or the hips. After the fat is harvested it is treated to increase the survival of the fat cells after they are injected or grafted. We use a new fat processing system called Adivive®. The Adivive® treatment removes dead cells and waste products and leaves healthy living fat cells that can achieve a 90% survival rate after injection. This compares to a 50% survival rate for fat cells that are not treated with the Adivive® or other special technique to increase survivability of transplanted fat cells. After the fat cells are prepared, they are injected into the facial areas using special blunt-tipped needles to minimize bleeding, bruising and swelling.

How will I look like after facial fat grafting or injection?

You will be swollen and bruised after fat injection. Bruising may be greater than that seen after a facelift. You will, however, see fullness in the treated areas but much of this is from swelling and it can take up to 6 to 8 weeks for the fat injection to reach its final appearance.

Is facial fat injection painful?

There is discomfort but most patients only require pain medications the first 3-4 days.

How long is recovery after facial fat injection?

It can take 3-4 weeks for swelling to go away. It will take 6 weeks or more for your final result.

What does facial fat injection cost?

The cost of fat injection depends on how many areas are treated and the volume of fat used. Generally facial fat injection costs between $5000 and $7500.

Who should do my facial fat injection or fat grafting?

Choose a plastic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is comfortable with fat grafting and fat injection procedures. Be certain to inquire whether your surgeon uses newer fat harvesting and fat cell preservation techniques.
