What is a natural looking Breast Augmentation?
Most of my Boston breast augmentation patients tell me that they want a natural looking breast augmentation. My patients tell me that they do not want to look fake and they do not want to look like they have obviously had breast implants. A natural looking breast augmentation results in a breast that is soft, movable, with fullness below the nipple areola and a shape that falls naturally over the crease or fold beneath the breast. The natural looking breast should not have a tight sharp circular appearance revealing the edges of the implant.

Choose a proper breast implant size for a natural looking breast augmentation
A breast implant size that has a diameter which matches the base width of your breast should be chosen. Your Boston plastic surgeon will measure the width of your breast and compare that measurement to a size of breast implant that has the same base diameter. The most common cause of breast implants that do not look natural is to choose a breast implant that is too large for your breast.
Choose a smooth round cohesive silicone gel breast implant for natural looking breast augmentation
The new round cohesive silicone gel breast implants feel and often look more natural than saline breast implants. Textured breast implants come in round and teardrop shapes but because of their thick wall they can feel more firm and often do not move as naturally with the body as round smooth walled silicone gel breast implants. In my experience the round smooth-walled cohesive silicone gel breast implants look the most natural. A recent survey of one group of board-certified plastic surgeons specializing anesthetic surgery revealed that 83% of those surveyed use the smooth-walled round silicone gel breast implants.
Choose a moderate profile plus breast implant for natural looking breast augmentation
Breast implants are available in different breast implant profiles including low-profile, moderate profile plus, high-profile and ultra-high profile implants. The moderate profile plus silicone gel implant is designed to have the closest shape profile to the normal natural female breast.
Choose the incision placed under the breast for natural looking breast augmentation
Placing the breast augmentation incision in the fold underneath the breast has been shown to reduce the chance of capsular contracture or hardening and visibility of the implant after breast augmentation. In addition, placing the incision underneath the breast allows the enlarged breast to fall over and hide the incision.
Choose breast implant placement under the chest muscle for natural looking breast augmentation
Placing the breast implant underneath the chest muscle, subpectoral breast augmentation, provides many very important advantages. The chest muscle provides additional coverage to conceal the breast implant. The chance of future hardness and visibility called capsular contracture is greatly reduced when the implant is placed under the chest muscle. In addition, the normal muscular activity gently massages the implant to help keep the implant soft and natural feeling as well as natural looking.
Choose breast augmentation with the no touch technique and triple antibiotic irrigation for natural looking breast augmentation
The no touch technique of breast augmentation with triple antibiotic irrigation avoids contaminating the implant with normal skin bacteria and helps prevent contamination of the implant by other factors in the operative environment. Careful observance of this technique including using the Keller funnel reduces the chance of capsular contracture, hardening of the implant and an unnatural look.
Choose an experienced board certified plastic surgeon with whom you feel comfortable for natural looking breast augmentation
Your choice of your plastic surgeon is an important element in achieving a natural looking breast augmentation. I always recommend consulting at least two experienced board-certified plastic surgeons who focus on anesthetic surgery in general and breast augmentation in particular.
