Dr. Brooke R. Seckel
Non-ablative fractional erbium laser resurfacing is a no down time, nonsurgical laser resurfacing procedure to remove facial skin aging changes such as wrinkles and brown spots, and to stimulate new skin collagen production to plump the facial skin and make the skin look younger.
The benefits of non-ablative fractional erbium laser resurfacing are:
Yes non-ablative fractional erbium laser skin resurfacing does work but requires a series of 3-4 treatments scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart. Understand that the benefits of non-ablative fractional erbium laser resurfacing take time as new collagen production does not begin until 6 weeks and goes on for at least 6 months after the last treatment.
The medical aesthetician will place a cold laser tip against your skin and the laser will be activated. There is slight discomfort when the laser is applied to the skin. Multiple applications of the laser across the entire skin service are done and in some cases a second pass is done. Cold packs will be applied immediately after treatment to comfort your skin.
Your face will be pink after non-ablative fractional erbium laser treatment. Ice packs will be applied, and pink or red color goes away in a few hours or overnight. More aggressive deeper non-ablative fractional erbium laser treatments can cause pinkness and skin peeling that can last 2 or 3 days. Topical hydrocortisone cream can reduce this reaction to deeper more aggressive non-ablative fractional erbium laser skin treatments.
The results of non-ablative fractional erbium laser resurfacing take time because new collagen stimulation does not occur until 6 weeks after your treatment. You will need 3-4 treatments scheduled a month to 6 weeks apart and will not see the full benefit until the skin has had time to regenerate new collagen. Final results are seen at 6 months after your last treatment.
Most non-ablative fractional erbium lasers work well when used properly by a trained nurse, PA, medical aesthetician or physician. In my opinion there are many advantages to the 1540 laser wavelength which we use. There are several non-ablative fractional erbium devices including:
In Massachusetts non-ablative fractional erbium laser treatments are done by a nurse, PA, or medical aesthetician in a medical spa environment which is supervised by a physician.
