Remove Spider Veins and Red Spots

What are spider veins, or dilated blood vessels, and telangiectasia, or red spots, on the skin?

Spider veins are visible dilated blood vessels or veins which appear as blue or red vessel lines most commonly occurring on the legs but also occurring on the face. They are similar to but much smaller than varicose veins which are much larger dilated veins seen only on the legs. Telangiectasia and red spots on the skin can be small dilated skin arteries below the surface that are visible.

What causes spider veins and facial telangiectasia, or red spots?

Spider veins and facial telangiectasia, or red spots, are caused by:

  • Elevated venous pressure in the lower extremities caused by weight gain, pregnancy, and occupations which require prolonged standing
  • Facial telangiectasia and red spots are caused by repeated inflammation of the skin caused by sun damage from UV radiation.

  • Telangiectasias or red spots of the face are also caused by thinning of the skin with aging which makes the small blood vessels more visible through the skin.

How are spider vein, leg veins and facial telangiectasia and red spots treatments done?

Smaller leg spider veins and facial telangiectasia less than 4 mm in diameter can be treated safely with IPL or intense pulsed light. Leg or lower extremity spider veins can also be treated with a 1064 Nd: YAG laser but the 1064 Nd: YAG should never be used on the face. Leg spider veins larger than 4 mm required sclerotherapy or injection treatments.

What is the best spider vein treatment?

I prefer the IPL or intense pulsed light for treatment of facial telangiectasia, red spots and smaller spider veins on the legs. In cases where the IPL is unsuccessful on the legs we use the 1064 Nd: YAG laser.

Are spider veins and facial telangiectasia or red spot laser and IPL treatments safe?

Laser treatments and IPL treatments for spider veins, leg veins, facial telangiectasia and red spots must be done under the supervision of a physician who is experienced in light therapy to treat blood vessels. Treatments done at the proper power settings in properly selected patients are safe. However, these treatments should not be done on people who have a tan or dark skin because the laser and light can be absorbed by the pigment in the skin and cause hypopigmentation or loss of pigment leaving white spots. Laser or IPL treatments for blood vessels uses laser heat to close the blood vessel and if too much heat as applied burns can result. Laser treatment for leg veins, facial telangiectasia, and red spots is only safe if performed by an experienced physician or nurse, PA, or medical aesthetician who was well-trained and under the supervision of a physician.

What will I look like after laser or IPL spider vein treatment?

You will see a change in the blood vessel immediately after treatment as the vessel usually darkens. The skin around the treatment area can be pink or red due to the heat generated by the laser or IPL blood vessel treatment. This redness called erythema usually goes away in a matter of hours.

How long before I see the results of laser or IPL spider vein treatments?

Laser or IPL removal spider veins, facial telangiectasias and red spots usually require 2 or 3 treatment sessions. Usually you see a reduction in the size of the blood vessel 6 weeks after your first treatment and 6 weeks after the third treatment the vessel is usually gone.
